Mike Weller, who was wearing his caretaker hat at the time, did all he could to help Hes Watching achieve greatness during the 2013 race season, and the son of American Ideal responded by putting together a perfect eight-for-eight freshman campaign. Now, during what is Weller’s time of need, Hes Watching, who now works in the breeding shed, is doing what he can to return the favour.
Weller fought this fight once before in 2016 when he was diagnosed with Stage 3 stomach cancer and he was able to battle and win. Now, the 60-year-old Milton, Ont. resident is facing the toughest battle of his life.
According to Weller’s friend, Lisa Flammini, this “very aggressive cancer has returned in his esophagus and Canada is out of treatment options. Mike [and his wife Sue Woodyatt] will be taking a leave of absence to find treatment options outside of Canada.”

Cancer touches us all at some point in our lives, so the Hes Watching Ownership Group and Tara Hills Stud are rallying together to help Weller – and who is a better figure than Hes Watching to lead the charge?
The Hes Watching Ownership Group and Tara Hills Stud have informed Trot Insider that a silent auction for a Hes Watching breeding in support of Weller will be taking place at ongait.com from Tuesday, April 16 at 9 a.m. to Thursday, April 18 at 9 p.m. The starting bid will be $2,000 (USD) and there is a live-foal guarantee. Hes Watching’s stud fee is $5,000 (CDN).
Proceeds from the auction will be earmarked for Weller. Out of country treatment comes at a considerable cost, and both Mike and Sue have been forced to take a leave of absence. The financial impact of the situation is beyond what the couple can afford.
